Embora citadina, nunca gostou do betão e sempre preferiu a natureza.
Portanto, sempre a abrir!
Some readers and friends have asked us to share a bit more about ourselves. So here’s a little glimpse of who we are and what we think :)
Luis is creative, ingenious, and multi-talented. A real handyman!
Ana is methodical, organized, and shares all her projects with Luís. She’s the one who gets things done! Ana grew up in the city but, like most kids of the '80s, was lucky enough to play freely outdoors. Although she’s a city girl, she’s never liked concrete and has always preferred nature.
After a long time away from gardens and orchards...THEY ARE OUT THERE!! Find out more about their back-to-the-land movement and what led them down this path.
Our search for a different life started many years ago. We were young, without a single gray hair! We wanted nothing more than to live surrounded by nature and farm the land. In our early 20s, we went searching for a piece of land. We knocked on doors everywhere, from real estate offices to town halls, and got some pretty skeptical looks. Nobody understood why two young people would want to farm. Some even looked at us like we were crazy, wondering what we wanted the land for! You could almost see the thought bubble above their heads… they clearly thought we were looking to grow something illegal...! Being young isn’t easy!
Years went by until we finally found a spot and started cultivating. Little by little, we cleared out an overgrown jungle, and the garden and orchard began to take shape. Our love for the land grew so much that over the years we kept learning more, taking courses on organic farming, beekeeping, pruning and grafting, horticulture, and aquaponics (a topic we haven’t covered on the blog yet, but we will!).
While formal education is important, we both believe there’s nothing like being self-taught: researching, discovering, learning from your own mistakes… and others’ too! That’s how life is, and that’s how working the land is.
We’ve faced many tough times that made us pause farming and the blogging for long stretches. Over the years, we’ve been through a lot. One of us stayed in Portugal while the other worked abroad in harsh conditions, followed by a long period of unemployment, then Luís was diagnosed with a serious heart condition, and Ana with burnout. So yeah, it’s been quite a journey!
Though we try to approach our story with humor, these challenges hit us hard and left a mark. But since hope is the last thing to die, we keep moving forward with a refreshed blog and new topics covering a lifestyle we embrace and want to share with those who think like us and even with those who don’t!
Here on our blog, we share our experiences and adventures in rural living, aiming for a healthy life. We try, as much as possible, to eat organic food grown in our own garden, be as self-sufficient as we can while preserving the environment, live at a slower pace, listen to our body and mind, and take care of our well-being. Even when we travel, we try to do it as sustainably as possible and share our tips so you can do it too. Our goal is to share all that we know to help others take care of their own holistic well-being.
Follow along on our journey and feel free to share your experiences too.
A big hug,
Ana & Luís
