How To Peel and Blanch Almonds Easily

Almonds are super versatile nuts and peeling them is easier than it seems. They can be used in confectionery, liqueurs, milk and vegetable oil, and have excellent health benefits. However, they are not a cheap product, which means that when it comes to buying it could be an advantage to choose the ones in their shells in order to obtain a larger quantity. In this post we will show you how to peel and blanch almonds in an easy way. You can also watch our educational video at the end of the post, where we show you how to do it step-by-step.

Required Materials

  • 1 Nutcracker
  • 1 Measuring cup or spoon
  • 1 Heat resistant glass bowl
  • 1 Strainer
  • 1 Kitchen cloth or towels

How To Do It

  1. A nutcracker can be used to crack the almonds. The shell is hard, but there are always weak spots where you can apply pressure to be easier to break.
  2. To blanch the almonds, place them in a bowl with hot water (1 cup of almonds for every 2 cups of water) for only 1 minute;
  3. Then just use a strainer to wash the almonds with cold water. The cold water after the hot water gives a thermal shock that will loosen the almonds' skin.
  4. Remove the excess water, using a cloth or kitchen towels and let the almonds cool down.
  5. Squeeze the almonds to remove the skin. The skin will come out easily.

It is very simple and quick to do. Check out our step-by-step video.
